Skin Testing Before Hair Colouring

Skin testing before colouring hair at Partners Hair and Beauty, Broughty Ferry

Why is it so important to undergo skin testing before hair colouring?

Hair Colour Skin Bad ReactionSkin testing is vitally important prior to having your hair coloured. This is due the potential risks associated with an active ingredient found in most hair dyes, known as ‘PPD’ (paraphenylenediamine).

‘PPD’ has been proven to cause allergic reactions to hypersensitive individuals, causing very uncomfortable symptoms such as blistering of the skin, infection and soft tissue swelling (as pictured).

What does it mean to be hypersensitive?

Hypersensitivity can be quite common. It is an over reaction of the immune system to what is known as an ‘invading’ hapten, such as PPD. Haptens have the ability to provoke an immune response that brings about such dramatic changes in the body’s tissues (known as an allergic response or allergy).

In extremely severe cases reactions can be life threatening and these allergic responses can develop at any time. The simplest way to avoid such nasty complications is to have a skin test at Partners Hair & Beauty, Dundee!

F.A.Qs regarding colouring your hair

Q: I have been dyeing my hair for many years and have never had an allergic reaction. Why should I have a test now?
A: You can become hypersensitive to new things every day, some people may suffer from allergies all of a sudden, hay fever for example or even latex gloves – you can develop sensitivities at any time in your life.

Q: I am taking medication – will this affect the result?
A: It has been found that medication can indeed vary your reactions to hair dye. Some may suppress any existing hypersensitivity, some may make you hypersensitive.

Q: Why do I have to test 48 hours before the application of hair-dye?
A: In some cases, the most severe version of hypersensitivity is a cell mediated reaction – this can take at least 48 hours to occur.

Skin testing for application of bleach

Each individual has a different sensitivity or tolerance to scalp bleaching. Different factors such as skin type (dry/oily etc), room temperature and temperature of the persons scalp all play a part in how bleach works.

It is completely normal to feel an itching or tingling sensation, even a little heat when bleach is first applied to your scalp so try not to be too alarmed. If you feel any MAJOR discomfort during the bleaching process however, please inform your Partners Hair & Beauty stylist IMMEDIATELY.
